Apple releases new iMac G5

Apple yesterday released their new mid-range desktop, the iMac G5. It’s a very sleek design where everything sits behind / in either a 17″ or 20″ LCD enclosure. Apple again kicks PC design and ingenuity up a notch with this new unit, where everything is enclosed, even the power supply, with ports on the back to connect your keyboard mouse, power cord, and firewire / USB devices.

Apple iMac G5

Very cool stuff, even for a person who doesn’t own a Mac.

Upgrade to MT 3.1

I’ve just upgraded the internals of the site to version 3.1. It looks the same on the surface, but good fixes / additions underneath. I haven’t changed the archives to dynamic creation yet, as I’m still debating on whether I should try messing with it or not, but everything else seems aok. Let me know if you have any troubles accessing the site.

id Software Doom3 Interview on GameSpy

Over on GameSpy, they have an interview with id Software’s Tim Willits, Todd Hollenshead, and a comment by Marty Stratton. It’s an interesting read, and also talks about the Doom3 tournament at QuakeCon 2004 this year. You can check it out here.

[H]ard|OCP releases id’s official Doom 3 benchmarks

Over on [H]ard|OCP, they just released an article describing id Software’s official benchmarks they performed on Doom 3. There are some surprising results, with the NVidia cards outperforming ATI’s latest by a solid margin. Also surprising is that the experience will still be quite good on lower hardware, even GeForce 3 cards. You can read the whole article here.

Apple G4 CubeQuarium

I was surfing around the web, and for some reason wanted to look at some info about the Apple G4 Cube. Well I stumbled on an individual who turned a dead G4 into an aquarium. Here’s what it looks like:

It’s a pretty amazing conversion, and you can read more about it here.

Article of a writer’s experience of a Two Seat ChampCar

John Canzano had a chance to ride in one of the two seat ChampCars recently and wrote his experience here. It’s definitely an interesting and entertaining read, especially because the author previously thought motorsports weren’t sport at all and thought that anyone could race a car without any physical training.

TiVo Upgrade

Now that the warranty ran out on my TiVo I took the plunge and added some space to my Series 2 unit, moving from a single 80GB / 80 Hour unit to a 80GB/120GB dual drive unit that gives me 230 hours. To do this I bought the bracket necessary for the upgrade from Weaknees, selecting their TwinBreeze unit, which includes an extra fan. Then following the directions at Weaknees TiVo Upgrade Instructions site, I went through the process of removing the original drive from the unit, performing a backup of the TiVo OS and then adding the new drive. After putting it all back together the system recognized the new space and I was in business. All in all it took less than an hour for me to almost triple the space of my TiVo. I would recommend Weaknees’ TwinBreeze bracket mounting system to anyone looking to upgrade their TiVo.
